Rupert Hughes — Collected Poems
Rupert Hughes is remembered as a Hollywood polymath and as the uncle of aviator-industrialist Howard Hughes, but poetry marked both the beginning and the late summation of his career. His 1901 dramatic monologue Gyges’ Ring gave a morally troubled voice to a classical usurper; his 1949 retrospective collection placed that work beside sonnets, elegies, translations, patriotic verse, comic dialect, erotic lyrics, and free verse written across half a century. The range is inseparable from a life spent moving among music scholarship, magazines, Broadway, filmmaking, biography, radio, military service, and Los Angeles literary institutions. This edition restores the full 1949 collection from the source scan while preserving its sections, stanza structures, and lineation.
