Caldwell, William Mackay — Pan’s Reeds

Dates unconfirmed

William Mackay Caldwell left one substantial book, and it is stranger and more varied than its pastoral title suggests. Pan’s Reeds moves among sonnets, ballads, prayers, French and Latin titles, desert scenes, Japanese-themed lyrics, Christian imagery, and love poems, all issued from Los Angeles in 1915. Reliable facts about Caldwell’s life remain scarce, so the edition does not build a personality out of guesswork. It lets the book supply the record: a formally ambitious Southern California volume whose old-world literary vocabulary repeatedly opens onto desert light and local landscape.
