Alvaro Cardona-Hine — Collected Poems
Alvaro Cardona-Hine arrived in Los Angeles at thirteen, learned English, studied music, and found a literary community among the poets who gathered around Coastlines, Thomas McGrath, and the Incognoscenti workshop. The Gathering Wave (1961), one of the earliest American books devoted entirely to English-language haiku, compresses tropical childhood and California perception into forty-eight poems accompanied by his drawings. The Flesh of Utopia (1965) expands into long, spatially restless sequences of memory, politics, surreal humor, and friendship. This edition presents both early books complete from their source scans, restoring lineation, stanza breaks, dedications, and shaped indents while distinguishing physical page wraps from authorial form.
