C. F. MacIntyre — Collected Poems
C. F. MacIntyre moved from Iowa to Los Angeles, from the classrooms of USC, Occidental, and UCLA to the cafés of Europe, and from tightly made lyrics to an influential career translating Baudelaire, Mallarmé, Verlaine, Rilke, Goethe, Corbière, and Stefan George. His poetry is at once learned and physical: bulls, tigers, insects, statues, streets, lovers, ruins, and anxious modern citizens crowd its pages. This edition restores the complete texts of Poems (1936), Cafés and Cathedrals (1939), and The Black Bull (1942), adds every available selection from The Brimming Cup and Potsherds (1930) and the new poems in Tiger of Time and Other Poems (1965), and gathers three early or uncollected periodical poems. It also documents known poems whose texts have not yet been recovered, rather than silently treating the surviving record as complete.
