Lawrence P. Spingarn — Collected Poems
Lawrence P. Spingarn sustained one of the longest and most varied poetry careers in postwar Los Angeles. After work at the Library of Congress and in New York publishing, he came west to teach at Pomona College, UCLA, and Los Angeles Valley College. His books move from the tightly formal historical poems of Rococo Summer and The Lost River to the travel satire, family memory, Jewish inheritance, and Southern California grotesquerie of Madame Bidet, Freeway Problems, The Dark Playground, and Going Like Seventy. In 1968 he founded Perivale Press in Van Nuys, publishing his own writing and poetry in translation, and in 1975 he edited the regional anthology Poets West. This edition resets all poetry books represented by complete local scans and avoids duplicating poems that reappear without fundamental reconception.
