Adolphe Danziger de Castro — Collected Poems
Adolphe Danziger de Castro wrote across languages, nations, genres, and several sharply different literary worlds. Born in Congress Poland under the name Abram Dancygier, he became Gustav Adolf Danziger in the United States and legally adopted Adolphe de Castro in Los Angeles in 1921. He edited and published on the Pacific Coast, wrote Jewish history and fiction, served briefly in the American consular service, practiced law, translated drama, collaborated with Ambrose Bierce, and later supplied stories revised by H. P. Lovecraft. His poetry is no less mobile: conventional love lyrics in English and German give way to California-era fables, Jewish and wartime poems, translations from the German literary East, and the long biblical and desert narratives of his last decades. This edition gathers the two surviving early books, the complete 1950 volume, and the late periodical poem that can be recovered in full, while identifying poems and manuscripts still missing.
