Samuel Hawkins Marshall Byers — Collected Poems
Samuel Hawkins Marshall Byers carried one of the Civil War’s most improbable songs out of a Confederate prison. He wrote “Sherman’s March to the Sea” at Camp Asylum on Christmas Day 1864; the words were smuggled through the lines in an artificial leg, set to music, and soon sung across the North. That combination of history, adventure, public feeling, and memorable refrain followed him through a long poetic career. After soldiering came diplomacy, journalism, travel, civic verse, California landscape, and the mission bells of his Los Angeles years. Six books—from The March to the Sea and The Happy Isles to The Bells of Capistrano, The Pony Express, and In Arcadia—show Byers moving between national legend and intimate lyric, martial confidence and old-age reflection. Collected Poems restores that surprisingly varied career beyond the single song that made him famous.
