Isaac Kinley — Labor Rhymes
Isaac Kinley carried reform across nearly nine decades of American life. An Indiana teacher and Free-Soil delegate to the convention that framed the state constitution, he became a Republican legislator, a Union officer terribly wounded while commanding the Thirty-sixth Indiana at Stones River, and later an editor and labor politician in Los Angeles. His privately printed Labor Rhymes (1886) turns that history into direct public verse: long visions of labor’s emancipation, songs for fraternal fellowship, attacks on plutocracy, and exhortations to endurance. This edition resets the complete book from its original scan and adds two later poems located during research, “Voices of Angels” (1889) and “Karma” (1894).
