Hugh Fox — Eye Into Now and Other Experimental Books

February 12, 1932 (Chicago, Illinois) – September 4, 2011 (East Lansing, Michigan)

Hugh Fox treated every border as an invitation: Chicago Catholicism and Jewish conversion, Los Angeles classrooms and Latin American travel, little magazines and academic life, archaeology and pop culture, page and performance. In the 1960s he absorbed foreign film, experimental typography, Bukowski’s early books, and poetry circulating beyond established presses; journeys through Venezuela, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Peru brought new languages, myths, and visual structures into the work. The poems can be spoken, projected, scattered across the page, or driven forward in breathless narrative. Eye Into Now and Other Experimental Books restores five complete books and sequences—Eye Into Now, The Headless Centaurs, Glyphs, Son of Camelot Meets the Wolfman, and Huaca—with additional verified poems. Together they reveal a prolific internationalist whose restless forms made Los Angeles one station in a lifelong experiment.
