Grace Ellery Channing — Collected Poems

Grace Ellery Channing carried a New England literary inheritance into the unsettled culture of Southern California, then carried California and Italy into a poetry of landscape, love, public faith, and war. A childhood friend and occasional collaborator of Charlotte Perkins Gilman, the wife of painter Charles Walter Stetson, an early champion of Walt Whitman, and an accredited correspondent on the French and Italian fronts, she lived at the crossing of several literary and artistic worlds. This edition restores her complete 1899 collection Sea Drift, gathers the poems located in The Land of Sunshine, Out West, newspapers, and wartime anthologies, and documents the revisions by which her periodical verse entered book form.
