Eliza Ann Otis — Collected Poems
Eliza Ann Wetherby Otis wrote across the nineteenth century’s sharpest changes: from a New Hampshire childhood and a young marriage shadowed by the Civil War to journalism in Santa Barbara, a year on Alaska’s remote St. Paul Island, and two decades at the heart of the Los Angeles Times. Under her own name and the signature Susan Sunshine, she filled newspapers with poetry, children’s writing, domestic journalism, travel, public commemoration, and an exuberant record of Southern California. This edition gathers the recoverable extracts from Echoes from Elf-Land, two poems found in The Magazine of Poetry and Literary Review, the complete Christopher Columbus, and the entire verse portion of the posthumous California: “Where Sets the Sun.”
