Arthur Orison Dillon — Collected Poems

Arthur Orison Dillon treated poetry as a public office. Teacher, lawyer, deputy marshal, judge, newspaper editor, councilman, political candidate, wartime organizer, and relentless private publisher, he used verse to argue with nearly every institution that shaped his life. His poems memorialize Lincoln, his mother, a lost beloved, California towns, music, work, poverty, war, law, religion, and his own literary ambition. They also preserve the contradictions of Progressive white civic culture: Dillon attacked concentrated wealth and dictatorship while endorsing eugenics, racial separation, and coercive ideas of national fitness. He mailed his books to hundreds of libraries, solicited responses, quoted reviewers, and created a one-man distribution system outside the literary establishment.
