Jack Hirschman — A Correspondence of Americans

December 13, 1933 (the Bronx, New York) – August 22, 2021 (San Francisco, California)

Jack Hirschman’s first book already contains the voices that would argue inside his work for six decades: Bronx child and comparative-literature scholar, comic performer and mourner, formal apprentice and poet who wanted language loose in the street. A Correspondence of Americans appeared in 1960 just before he moved to UCLA, carrying Hart Crane, W. C. Fields, Allen Ginsberg, jazz, painting, myth, lovers, and subway speech into a crowded American music. Los Angeles sharpened the mixture. Hirschman taught Jim Morrison, opposed the Vietnam War, lost his university post, lived in Venice, and wrote poems whose anger and typography broke with the academic world he had entered. This edition restores the complete first collection and gathers early magazine work, Los Angeles poems, and translations, making one crucial book—and the transformation that followed it—readable without pretending to replace Hirschman’s enormous later career.
